Time Flies When You're Havin' Fun

Yesterday marked my 1 year Anniversary here at KRBC. And I guess I'd have to say, "Time Flies When You're Havin' Fun!" Because boy has time just flown right by and yes, it's been a lot of fun. It literally feels like it was just a few weeks ago that I was planning my big trek across country from Miami. At the same time my life feels so settled here in Abilene and I do feel at home. I didn't just start feeling that way though, when I went back to Florida for a visit a few months ago, I felt like a visitor/tourist. And just a year ago, that was what I considered home. Being a TV news reporter is definitely an adventurous job. Over the summer of 2008, I applied to about 100 TV stations all over the country...not knowing where I'd end up...nor did I really have a preference because I was always told you have to go wherever you could get your foot in the door. So when it came down to decision-making time, I obviously chose Abilene because it sounded like the best fit for me and sure enough, I think it was. Looking back, at Fargo, North Dakota and Lincoln, Nebraska as options...the decision to come here to the Big Country was a pie of cake.

  1. You have only been there a year yet they are getting rid of people that have been there way LONGER than you and way BETTER than you. What is up with that? You must know someone special!!!!!

  2. The news is going to h3ll. I'm also wondering who you know to keep your job? It would make most people fell real bad if they where picked over someone who has been there a lot longer and does a better job. How do you feel?

  3. Go back to Florida. Let the good news personal keep their jobs!!!!!!!!!

  4. What keeping you and getting rid of Downing? REALLY You have to know someone really important.
That would make most people fell bad.

  5. Isn't it nice you can hide behind "anonymous" and still be a total ass. If you were a normal person you'd share who the hell you are instead of hiding in the shadows and throwing sh*t out because your too f**king ignorant to say stuff to Brittany's face.

There are people I don't like on all three news stations here but you don't see me on their blogs, websites or social networks making remarks to belittle their character or throw mud in their face just because I'm pissed off someone who's been on the news forever has been let go. Look at any company in Abilene, Texas and the U.S buddy. Everyone is making cuts because of the economy. I don't think the news talent were called into a room and told to vote someone off the news set like it was some version of Survivor.

Brittany, don't let this jerk or jerkess get you down. No matter where you go, your going to have people who like you and don't like you. Just do the best you can and be happy and confident in the God given talents you possess and enjoy your choice of profession!

  6. Wow such language I bet she leaves it because it is positive about her.

  7. Well I'm not very computer savvy but if someone can tell me how to post using my name I will. I don't have any of the accounts that are listed on the comment page. If someone would ask me my name I wouldn't have a problem telling them that it is Denise Ingram and I'm from Baird. Yes I'm one of the posters that has negative things to so. I guess I'm not the only one because all the posts aren't mine. Imagine that. I certainly haven't used such language. It needs to be deleted like the negative posts have been.

  8. Well Roger I'm in the same boat as the previous poster. I can't log in my name because I have don't have a google name. All you have to do is ask my name is Mabel Campbell from Abilene and I have been watching the Abilene news channels for over 35 years. I have to tell you it is going south REALLY quick. I also agree with a previous post that it is SAD that the station would let Downing (who has been there 30 years and done a great job) go and keep some one who has been there a hole year. Don't you think that is kinda ODD. She must know someone somewhere. SUCH LANUAGE!

  9. The last time I heard language like that Roger I was in the navy. I am one of those terrible people that don't care for Brittany. I will tell you up front my name is Robert (BOB) Willis and I'm from Abilene. Don't know how to comment with my name. I do know that that it is terrible that a man that has worked long and hard at a job shouldn't be booted to the curb. I also think if I did some of the things that Brittany did I would be booted to the curb.

  10. If you guys don't like Brittany why do you keep reading her blog?

    ReplyDelete
  11. To she what stupid thing she does or says next!
Don't watch her on the news but she will tell you all about it on the blog.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I keep up with everyones blog ans comment on most.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I also will no longer watch the KRBC news. The news is just going down hill fast. I would rather watch KTXS than see them destroy KRBC. I REALLY sad. I REALLY makes me think why would they keep you and get rid of Downing. What is the news station coming to? I do believe in cut back but in most case the last hired gets cut. Keeping you and your goofy ways and getting rid of Downing makes no sense! You must KNOW someone.

    ReplyDelete
  14. So what did you have to do to KEEP your job?

    ReplyDelete
  15. A superstar in the making????????????????? OH MY GOD! His Mr.Thomas goofy or what! So how did you keep your job?

    ReplyDelete
  16. WHAT IS MR THOMAS THINKING?????? 22 years of GREAT service verses 1 years of service Come on that would be a no brainer. You have to know someone or have something on someone high up. I would fell like crap if I took someones job that had worked that long and hard. Oh that's right you are a super star in the making.

  17. You will NEVER be a Downing or even close!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I dont remember anyony saying that it is Brittanys fault. I think they are just wondering why to keep Brittany and get rid of Downing. I remember several comments that they WERE blaming Mr Thomas. I don't think all of them were annonymous. P.S. If you don't like the comment don't read them.

  19. old ugly people jealous of a cute new face.. typical. Brittany, you are fun and upbeat and you bring something fresh. To all you people who comment negatively: If you don't like her then stop obsessing over her page and don't watch her, plain and simple. And clearly a lot of the anonymous posts are repeats.. it's very obvious. Sorry bout it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. They probably have more "old ugly" viewers than young ones. The older viewers are who they need to keep and try to make happy. I bet most the the viewers are over the age of 55. Most young people do other things than watch the news. My parents and grandparents NEVER miss the news. Most of their friends watch it also. My grandparents have always watched KTXS. My parents have recently started watching KTXS because they loved Downing. Dad met him years ago and thought he was a good guy and watched just because of him. Carrie Cornett

  21. I got on this blog because of a conversation that took place last week. A very esteemed member of the KRBC news team has been a family friend for many years. Your name happened to come up in a conversation last week with this person (I'm not going to mention names) and they said how impressed they are with you, about how good your work ethic is, what a hard woker you are, and how impressed they have been with the quality of your work (with both reporting and anchoring). I'm at work when you're on the news, but this conversation prompted me getting on this website. I am very sorry for all these nasty comments and am very upset by them. I'm very sorry that this is the way some members of this community have chosen to represent it. When the comments are left as anonymous, it can likely be the same person leaving them. Personally, I think it speaks to the character and class of the person if insulting someone makes them feel better. It is no different than a bully on a playground. These comments serve no purpose other than to be mean and to try to hurt someones feelings...people like this have always enraged me! The bigger person is the one that takes them in stride and keeps on going. I would never leave comments like this for anyone, even if I didn't like a person personally or professionally...hurting someone elses feelings & insulting someone (especially someone who has never done anything to me) does not make me feel good about myself at all, the exact opposite actually. It's usually the people that want to complain that will leave comments on these things. I am so impressed with you, Brittany, for continuing to blog despite "these" people and continuing to do a great job! I think the compliments of your co-worker speak louder than any of these people! Please know that these nasty, mean spirited comments are not representative of the community as a whole!

    ReplyDelete
  22. So what is YOUR name? Not all the comments are anonymous. Maybe they are like you they didn't have a blogging name. Maybe the reason why the co worker says these things they are afraid of the consequences of being negative towards Brittany.Ya know she is a up and coming star according to Mr Thomas himself. If it was for your job some people would say anything! I think they should do a pole and ask people what they think. Oh ya my name is Carrie Moss and I'm from Lawn.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So let me get this straight. The comments oh say on Downing's blog which are positive means that no one likes Downing. They also don't represent the community as a whole. Ya right when pigs fly! I personally didn't watch the news until my co workers were talking about the news about a month ago and said how bad it was getting. People not knowing how to read, what to say, not knowing what a cue was and last but certainly not least having some common sense. I'm not originally from here. If the news personal from Dallas was like the ones here lately they wouldn't have a job. I watch the news here now for a laugh not for the news. There is one thing I do agree with is if you post you should post your name. Marshall Wright Dyess Air Base.
One last thing people in Dallas have actually heard of Downing and have positive this to say about him.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't get why this has turned into a Brittany vs. Downing thing. It's not like she is taking his job. I really like Downing and I think Brittany does a good job, too! I'm not happy about KRBC's decision regarding Downing, but I don't see what good leaving comments like this on Brittany's page are doing, are they changing anything? I think the point people are trying to make is, if you like Downing, then leave positive comments on his page. If you don't like Brittany for some reason, then just don't read this blog and don't leave rude comments that serve no purpose other than to insult someone or try to make them feel bad.

  25. Brittany is the one that seems like she is saying I've only been here a year and I'm staying. She seems like she is saying HAHAHAHAHA.
People have been leaving comments on Downing's blog.It just kinda shows what people know days will do to keep a job and what kind of person Brittany is. You don't see any of the others saying saying been having fun although people are loosing their jobs. Do you NO! What the heck does "the decision to come here to the Big Country was a pie of cake" what is a pie of cake??? Hope she has lots of FUN while others are leaving with the viewers. Dale Conell Abilene

    ReplyDelete
  26. That's not the way I took this blog post, I simply took it as Brittany expressing how glad she is to be in this community. I'm also pretty sure that "pie of cake" was a typo & is supposed to be piece of cake, much like make misspelling "loosing" was a typo in your post since it is actually spelled losing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. In response to the last comment posted, I appreciate that someone took it the right way of my being happy to be part of this community and to finally feel at home here in Abilene. It was definitely not a "haha" I have a job and others are losing theres. Co-workers here in the newsroom are like one big family...so of course, we are sad about our friends leaving. As for all of the comments about Downing, I am sorry that so many people are blaming me for the company's decision. Downing has been a role model, a mentor, and a friend to me for my year here at KRBC and I can say things even behind the scenes will not be the same without him here. My blog posts are never meant to offend anyone. As for my "pie of cake," yes that was a typo...should have been "piece". What I meant by that was because I knew Abilene would be such a nice place to live with friendly people, nice weather, and a sense of community...it made my decision easy to come here in the first place.

  28. I had a supervisor for many years (15) and he had to move do to a family illness. The WHOLE place was bummed. You could walk into the building (that employed about 60 people) and tell there was something wrong. No one there had much fun for a while must less wrote a blog about it like Brittany did. Her timing was way OFF. The way most people would do in this situation would be hold off on your FUN BLOG. Another reason why it sounded like HAHA I'm staying and a great man is leaving timing is everything. Did see any of the others talking about how much fun they are having. 22 years that is a long time! It would be nice if she had used some common sense and maybe some thoughtfulness. 29. Geez, people this is getting ridiculous! I guess if you are wanting to pick Brittany apart and look for faults & reasons to complain, then you can always do that if you try hard enough. I do not see in any way how this post was Brittany saying "haha." Actually, she is speaking of what a great community this is, despite several people in it being so nasty to her. Seriously people, this girl is in her early 20's...does tearing down a 20-something girl really make you feel that much better about yourself? If your answer is yes, then I feel sorry for you, if the answer is no, then I have an idea...stop reading Brittany's blog, don't watch KRBC, and stop leaving such hateful comments. Another question...do any of you have children? Just consider how you would feel if people were leaving comments like this for your child or loved one. Talk about thoughtfulness...I would say Brittany is not the one who has the problem with compassion, consideration, or being thoughtful after reading most of these comments!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Several people! I have counted more than a several. That is NOT even counting the ones that don't leave their names. Not even all the ones that leave a positive comments have gave their names. YES I do have children and if they did some of the things like Brittany has done I would wonder about them. The dog thing and having FUN blog when the timing was really BAD are just two of the things that I would be talking to my own children about.

  32. I guess I'm just not seeing what Brittany has done that is so bad to deserve this kind of treatment. I think the person who brought up that this is a girl in her early 20's, people! Cut her some slack, how about it! Personally, I'm very disappointed in how rude, hateful, and mean most of these comments are. If you want to complain, how about giving a little constructive criticism, instead of these comments that have no purpose other than to be mean. Also...how about the Golden Rule people? Are you proud of your rude comments, does leaving comments like this make you feel good? Wouldn't make me feel good!

  33. Well I guess people in their early twenties just like to have fun. That has nothing to do with common sense. You do make a good point. Someone in the early 20's verses someone that has done the job for OVER 20 years let me see who would MOST people pick? Ya she knows someone in management!!!!!

  34. What happened to the saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"?

It is a shame that grown adults are saying the things they are on this page. The sad truth is that the rude commenters just don't know any better and probably never will. I will pray for them.

    ReplyDelete
  35. SOME OF YOU NEED TO REALIZE THAT A LOT OF BIG ANCHORS HAVE BEEN CUT FROM NEWS STATIONS AROUND THE U.S. BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMY. HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU THINK THE STATION HAD TO PAY FOR SUCH EXPERIENCE LIKE DOWNING, VERSUS SOMEONE WITH JUST ONE YEAR OF EXPERIENCE? IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO MONEY. IM SURE SHE IS MAKING WAY LESS THAN HE WAS. THAT IS WHY SHE IS IN THAT POSITION. NOT CAUSE SHE "KNOWS" SOMEONE OR BECAUSE SHE IS "CUTE." SHE IS YOUNG AND THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY HER VERY MUCH.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'd bet the long time viewers would take up the money to get Downing back. I know I would chip in some money to have someone that knows what they are doing! The reason why they don't pay her much is because she is not good. I tried to watch her several times and OMG. How hard is it to read the cards and follow the cue. According to what I saw it must be VERY hard for her. That money thing is a bunch of chap. They have said they are looking to use the younger people to try to draw in the younger viewers.

  37. The person who left the comment regarding the money...I agree...I have been watching Downing for at least 20 years and while I was not happy about him being outed, I did realize money was probably a major factor. Also, another thing to consider...if ratings are not good, the first people to go are the anchors...they did not just get rid of Downing...they also got rid of Kyna & Michelle. Another thing I'm not getting here, why are you people blaming Brittany for what happened to Downing, she did not replace him. And, one more thing, I have recently started watching Brittany on the 5 o'clock news, I'm not seeing that she is bad at anchoring, she's as good as any I've ever seen. I also defintely agree with, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Does everyone leaving these rude comments really think you that you come across in a good light? You're the ones who look bad here, not Brittany. Callie Stevens
