I was eating dinner at the Beehive in Downtown Abilene Wednesday night and noticed something "suspicious-looking". A father and son were sitting nearby enjoying their dinner, when they started gossiping with the waitress. Being, the curious reported that I am...I was determined to find out what they were talking about. I later found out.
Sitting to my left, a Dyess airman and his significant other were dining. The waitress much later into the meal, told them that their meals and drinks were "taken care of". It immediately clicked...the Father sitting with his son bought them dinner. : ) What was even nicer was that, I heard the waitress say..."the person wants to remain anonymous but wants to thank you for serving this country and to let you know you're appreciated!" How classy! It immediately made me smile to see people doing such selfless and kind things for others. What I was also impressed by, was that the father did it with his sons knowledge, teaching him kindness. It was one of those moments that just make your day, and seeing the look of happiness and shock on the Dyess couples face was priceless.

That is wonderful for what the father and son did. My fiance has paid for stuff when he has seen one of our troops in a store, and they are always so nice and thankful. We ALL should do more of it and just liek the father and son did. Hear! Hear!
ReplyDeleteThis type of thing happens far more often in Abilene than you know down to and including asking the waitress to express thanks to the service member AND their family for the sacrifices they make for our country and ourselves. I've done it myself on more than two occasions.
ReplyDeleteOur military deserves special teatment and do not good told ENOUGH of how much we should appreciate them .... That act from the father was a good example of what we should do...Also, a very good example of what kind of stuff our kids should be taught.... We have done that before, and feel so blessed to be able to do it....
ReplyDeleteI wish you would improve your grammar skills. I cringe every time I read something you've written. You're a reporter for Heaven's sake. Take some classes or something!
ReplyDeleteIt's true, this is a very sweet story, but when something is written by a reporter, spelling and grammar should be considered. Most of the stories written contain numerous mistakes and it's pretty embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteWell, I am sure glad that some of you enjoyed this blog post for what it was. I know it happens often in the Abilene community, and that is one of the contributing factors of what a great place this is to be.
ReplyDeleteAs for the others, thanks for your constructive criticism. Blogs are a place to post your thoughts. We don't think in full sentences or paragraphs, we're human and think in thoughts. If you cringe every time you read my blog, then don't waste your time.
As an active duty military member I was blessed to have been stationed in Abilene for nearly ten years. I was reassigned in June 2010, but will be back to the Big Country when I retire in two years.
ReplyDeleteI can testify to having been on the receiving end of several meals, hand shakes, pats on the shoulder and other incarnations of appreciation from Texas hospitality. Why just in June during a farewell for a fellow Airman, several patrons at the Cracker Barrell paid for EVERY MEAL for our group...and there were quite a few of us.
I volunteered to serve because I believe I had/have a duty to do so while I am able to. I don't seek out appreciation, rather I try to avoid it. Most of my neighbors and co-workers would agree that I serve because I want to; to contribute to providing a safe and secure environment for my fellow Americans.
What I appreciate is the support that Texas and the Big Country in particular lend to service members and their families. It is easy to tell when you walk into an establishment while in uniform that you (we, I) are welcome here by the smiles, and greetings received.
Though I am away for a bit, my heart is still in Abilene. I will see you all when I return.

It is so good to hear from you! Glad you are doing well. You really are appreciated. We look forward to welcoming you back home! Take care of there.
ReplyDeleteI come from a family of all military. My father is a retired Chief with the Air Force (34 years in). My two brothers are both active duty, one is in the Air Force and the other is an Army Ranger. I married Army. When we are out and about anywhere and I see anyone military, whether it's the enlisted individual, the wife, son or daughter my heart boasts at the pride in seeing another individual standing up for me, for you, for my children, your children, for all of us. Reading this article says a lot of the father. I thank him for showing his support. I hope that someone else is doing the same for either one of my brothers. Unless you have lived the military life, had a loved one in, one just can't seem to comprehend fully what our devotion to the service is. It's a pride, it's a respect, it's a love thing. So to all of you out there that are wonderful enough to even stop and say thank you; thank you for supporting me and defending my freedom of speech, of thought of everything - I thank you. To those of you that are hateful and disrespectful to our service men and women because you don't agree with what is going on in our world or military right now - i have one question to ask...Why aren't you enlisted and doing something about it? Do you not have the courage or guts to stand up for someone else and not just yourself? If you don't like what's going on then do something other than complain and downgrade our service men and women for standing up so you can have the right to degrade them. Also - to Brittany - we all do typos..it's a blog for goodness sake..you let em have it girl!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you come from a great family! I appreciate all of you and what you do for our country on a daily basis. I do feel lucky to have such honorable and courageous men and women defending our freedom. Thanks for everything you do. And thanks for the support in regards to my blog. : )
